Along with alto, tenor and soprano saxophone, Joel also plays EWI, clarinet and wooden flute. He discovered this last instrument while touring the Carribean and Central America with Cuban recording artist Wilfredo Chirino and, while recording the album Evoluçion, heard the famous Jose Fajardo for the first time. It was a sound and style he would not forget and a few years later Joel bought a wooden flute for himself. This flute has become a hallmark of his performances ever since.
Joel has mastered many different styles over the years, and plays with as much integrity at a wedding as he does at a concert, in a theater show, or jazz café like the world famous Alto Jazz Café in Amsterdam. He’s the kind of musician who plays not only to his own demanding technical standards, but also always to the heart of the listener. "If it doesn't reach the audience, it isn't music."
